“For My Precious Ones” is a feature-length documentary directed by John Hosteen, who tells the story from his perspective as a Diné (Navajo) father, community health worker, and educator.  In 2019, John Hosteen set out to climb the six sacred mountains that define the boundaries of nearly 30,000 square miles of his ancestral homelands, Dinéh Bikéyah, which covers the Four Corners states of the Southwest US. Over the course of six years and an intensive apprenticeship learning cinematography during the production of Our Story- The Indigenous Led Fight to Protect Greater Chaco, John has emerged as an inspired filmmaker. In Precious Ones, John shares the sacred places that are the pillars of Diné teachings and traditions in the form of a carefully rendered cinematic letter to his young children, the broader Navajo community, and the rest of the world.  The elders and medicine men that are consulting us have described the distinct lack of interest in cultural teachings amongst the youth, and we have endeavored to render a film that will “reach them where they are”, namely, their screens. The film touches on the ever-present threats to health, culture, and land from extractive industries across their homelands, but the film focuses primarily on beauty, hope, and the traditions that have helped the Diné not only to survive, but to thrive, coming back from a population of less than 10,000 in 1866 to more than 400,000 today.  We choose hope so that we might inspire Diné youth and all communities to protect and engage with their traditions, lands, and languages, and to share their deep connection to nature with the wider world.
